Ate here yesterday morning and this morning, food was splendid. Best sourdough French Toast ever. Bar none. Also the gluten free pancakes were very good. Service was quick and cordial... arrive early 9 tables... Been coming here 10 years plus, food is always consistently good.

I've been here a few times and went back last weekend. If you're a local, expect friendlier service. I'm not a local, so it seems that "out of towners" don't get the friendliest reception/service. It's a little weird. That said, sometimes the wait staff lightens up towards the end of the meal (just before the check is delivered) and the food is generally pretty good. I was with a table of four last weekend - 2 of us ordered egg dishes and 2 of us got the "special" almond waffle with a side of cheddar potatoes. The waffle was decent - not very almond-like but still nice. It was served with a ton of mixed, fresh fruit - delicious. The cheddar potatoes are just hash browns with a thin slice of melted cheddar on it...not exactly what we expected. Overall, everyone was satisfied with the food, but the strange, abrupt service doesn't fit the cute, cozy atmosphere of the place. No credit cards - cash only.

I've experienced a lot of disappointing breakfast spots lately, so the Little Rooster Cafe was a welcome change. The place is small and adorable, filled with country-style rooster decor (that doesn't read well, but the effect is charming). Some have commented on the service being a little chilly to non-regulars, but I'm not looking to make a best friend out of my server; in our case, she quickly showed us to a table, had menus in our hands immediately, checked on our meals, refilled our coffee mugs twice, and called me "hon". No problems with that. My husband and I ordered the omelet with artichokes and other veggies (off the regular menu, not one of the specials). It also came with a piece of a baked potato & cheddar casserole, which was tasty. The omelet, though, was the star -- fresh, full of veggies and a healthy amount of melted cheese. I opted to pass on the included toast, but my husband enjoyed his slices with the jam left out on the table in little ramekins. The coffee was really good, not a watery diner flavor in the slightest. We weren't rushed, the place was bustling, and the food was brought out fresh and hot. Can't ask for much more than that before hitting the shops. FYI -- this is a cash only place.

Nice little brunch spot in Manchester. We had to wait about 25 minutes on a Saturday morning, which didn't seem too bad. The restaurant is tiny so a wait is likely. I had the Cock a Doodle Doo which is essentially a smoked salmon eggs Benedict. The dish was great - I really liked the dill-based sauce with capers. The cheddar potatoes were good but nothing life changing--they are basically hash browns with a slice of cheese on top. The coffee was hot and fresh. Cash/check only. This place should really take credit cards since it's located in such a tourist oriented town.

Wow, would have liked to have tried this place as am in town for Vermont horse show. Asked to sit outside as we have puppy with us. The woman was SO RUDE. Response was curt: "NO, we don't do dogs!" I have no problem with the policy, although I find it odd in a state with so many dogs per capita. But the rudeness of the response was so out of hand that I wouldn't eat there now if you paid me. So much for Vermont friendliness! Must be a transplant!!

I was pleased with my experience at the Little Rooster. I had two apple cinnamon flapjacks with bacon and coffee. All good - but nothing too memorable. Although many other Yelpers commented on the poor service, I had no problem with our waitress.

Stopped in or lunch after spending the afternoon up at Skyline Drive monastery. Shared a steak sandwich and Crispy Art Salad. Sandwich was NY Strip steak, cooked to order, on a baguette with Swiss cheese and caramelized onions. It was cooked perfectly, the bread was fresh and tasty. The salad consistent of mixed greens, creamy goat cheese, mandarin slices, tomatoes and was topped with a crispy fried artichoke, and a vinaigrette dressing. Both dishes were well portioned, satisfying and very tasty. Service was prompt and courteous. Note: they do no let accept credit cards (which still amazes me in this day and age, but, there's a Stewart's shop right next door with an ATM, if you don't bring enough cash for the meal, as I didn't...)

We have come here for the last 10 years - need I say more? It is great for breakfast and lunch, even though it gets crowded during Holiday weekends, but by now we have learned to time it right (and I am not telling you :-) ). The portions are not huge, which is good for my weight, but everything is freshly made. We look forward to see the specials of the day (usually 5-6 for breakfast and another 5-6 for lunch). Where else can you get fresh-made in-season fiddle-head salad and duck sandwich dishes, and no, they do not serve breakfast all day (there is another place for that up the street). The standard menu is good as well. They do have kids items even though not on the menu. Just remember to bring cash as they don't take plastic.

We have been to Manchester VT before. Every time we go we hear of two great places to go and this is one of them - so we tried it and great! I had the best and most different hash served. With freshly sautéed onions and sweet peppers and perfectly cooked poached eggs. Good coffee and fresh juice - a greatest breakfast place!

  • Stephanie L.

Food was good (nothing fantastic - but this town is filled with great options - so expectations are high!) Service is terrible - waitress is not suited for the service industry. Hardly cracked a smile and seemed unhappy to be there. It's ok for going to a standard breakfast out somewhere.

French/Swiss-inspired breakfast, count me in! The food is just amazing, you can taste that all of the ingredients come from Vermont farms! My husband loves the omelets, but everything is good. This spot has been featured on Food Network for a reason!

Decent food but very poor and rude service. Given the choices in the area I would highly recommend skipping this place and heading to gourmet cafe and restaurant down the road.

Great breakfast spot...our first visit to Vermont and this was our first stop. I had the fresh toast and it was so delicious. My husband had the pancakes with bacon. He liked them although we prefer buttermilk and their receipe was certainly a bit different. Ok--here is where the good meets the bad---THE COFFEE WAS HORRIBLE. I expected a cafe to have great or decent coffee. This tasted like coffee back wash water. Very disappointed since a good breakfast need a good cup of java. NOT here so do not order coffee.

One of the best lunches I've had in years. They aren't fancy but the proof is in the plate. +1 on the Ethan Allen, Bloody Mary, crab crakes and crispy art salad.

Worth the wait and us Cash Only. Most mornings there is a line out the door but it does move quickly. Just make sure to poke your head in and get your name on the list. The hostesses are pretty spot on with the wait time. This is more of a specialty restaurant that has roughly 10 tables and offers breakfast until 11am and lunch until 2pm. They also have liquor and offer mimosas, bloody Mary's and a couple of other drinks with breakfast or lunch. This review is for breakfast. They offer a full breakfast menu along with a blackboard filled with daily specials. They don't offer your average eggs or French toast here. They take pride in their food and offer something special. An example is they have cinnamon swirl French toast with raspberry butter. Or "the rooster" which is two poached eggs over smoked salmon on top of sour dough toast drizzled with a lemon dill sauce. The pancakes are usually filled with some tule of fruit. Although the place is always jammed for breakfast, you never feel rushed. The staff is constantly refilling your cup of coffee or offering hot water for your tea. Great place for quality breakfast in a cozy place. Ambiance - small but quaint. 4 stars Food - delicious 5 stars Price - reasonable 4 stars This place is CASH ONLY and stops serving breakfast at 11am.

I love breakfast, and love local owned gems. Came with high expectation, but left a little disappointed. Food was ok, just above average (quality, creativity, price...), but is it really worth the wait, and the waiting staff with an attitude? It is sad to see people waiting outside, when there are many open tables inside, not turned around fast enough to seat them. This goes back to the quality of the staff. The French bistro next door is a much better choice, and far superior coffee.

Fantastic breakfast! Being a party of 4 adults, we all got different items. And our plates were clean by the end. I got their special, Toasted Almond Waffle with fresh fruit. It was delicious. The portion size was perfect for me. Maybe not for a man. My husband got their special omelet: Canadian bacon, brie, and a veggie with cheddar potatoes. The cafe is very small and crowded, but comfortable with the air conditioner. They only accept cash or check. Luckily they accept out of state checks. I was reading past reviews about the service. The hostess was accommodating and our server polite. Our server was knowledgeable and was able to up-sell me on bacon with my waffle (got 4 pieces as a side) without any pressure. She also made a sippy cup of apple juice for my infant son, even though I had one in the diaper bag.

I have given the Little Rooser many chances, I do not lightly give a bad review, but frankly speaking, I have had many bad experiences there and need to share so you feel educated walking in there.. My first bad experience was last year, my family and I walk in there during the summer at around 1:15 p.m., and this sneid woman working there tells me they're not seating for lunch anymore? So we left...Bad experience #1! But our visit this past weekend sealed the deal.. We went in for lunch and immediately noticed all the rules posted everywhere, from sharing charges, to the no credit card policy, to the rules in the bathroom to the general uptight feeling of the place. It may look cute, but the staff is very terse and unwelcoming in general. In fact, during our visit, two tables got up and left before ordering their food. As for us, my wife ordered the veggie sandwich which she liked, however, I ordered the special "Duck Panini" and let me tell you, it was absolutely pathetic. It had a couple of SLIVERS of duck in it, I would say maybe 2 ounces in total? I left feeling extremely hungry and disappointed. I have never had a sandwich with such a small amount of protein in it. That being said, having overpaid for a small sandwich in a place that doesn't even take credit cards and has frankly unfriendly service and atmosphere...we will not be going back.

Nice breakfast -- but if you're going on the weekend go early because you will wait for a table in the small dining room. Solid food, nice service, and a comfortable table. Gentlemen: be sure to visit the bathroom; it's comically small. By the way, I like that they have a sign outside that says no cell phones. Could this have something to do with the number of diners from NYC and New Jersey? Perhaps.

The food is decent and the specials are cool, but the service is highly medicore. The wait staff were inattentive and seem to have no interest in providing a positive, friendly atmosphere.

We went there two days in a row after we liked the breakfast so much on our first day in town. I like the "cock-a-doodle do" and my wife likes the corned beef hash and eggs. Service was good as well.

I'm sorry but the service here was unprofessional and rude. Good food but good luck with service. I couldn't even get a word in before our waitress was turned around. It wasn't even busy.

Had breakfast here and while it was ok it was far from amazing and the staff seemed very uptight. Cash or check only which I hate about any place. I will definitely look for better next time I go to Manchester.

We had breakfast at the Little Rooster Café this morning and it was not a positive experience. We stopped in because Up for Breakfast had a wait and we were in a hurry. The service was bordering on rude. It was busy and they were under staffed which is no excuse to be rude. You could cut the tension with a knife. The coffee was very weak. I asked for half veggie hash and half corned beef and was immediately told no, so I ordered the corned beef hash. I am not sure why my request could not be honored because all I was served was a small plate with a side of hash. Not sure why they could not just give me a side of each. I heard they were known for their hash, but this was nothing more than diced deli corned beef mixed with greasy hash browns. Nothing special and so greasy I felt sick after eating it. We will definitely not be back. Up for breakfast is far superior with much better service.

My boyfriend and I are enjoying a beautiful trip to the Equinox this summer. After dining at the resort for breakfast yesterday, we decided to try The Little Rooster today. Upon walking in we were undecided about whether we would order breakfast or lunch. One of the waitresses overheard or conversation while waiting to be seated and informed us they were only serving lunch...so our minds were made up. After being seated in the very uptight atmosphere of the cafe, I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable. The wait staff seemed to be in a major rush and were buzzing around the cafe without making conversation or eye contact with any patrons. As previous reviewers said, there were rules everywhere. I took out my cell phone at one point to look at directions for the outlets but immediately put it away for fear of being scolded. Another awkward moment were the waitresses scolding the kitchen staff out loud! They continued to talk loudly about the kitchen staff in the dining area for everyone to hear. We did love our meals and would have come back the next day to try breakfast, but our days of being scolded are over.

The breakfast here was awesome! It was down the road from our hotel and I found one good review on yelp so we checked it out. On a Saturday morning it was packed even though the parking lot was empty. I think a lot of the people had walked cause of the nearby inns. As we walked in, the waitress told us to check the specials on the chalk board. The menu was small but full of basics and some interesting specials. I got the Maia's special which was cinnamon raisin french toast with a Vermont berry butter. Oh my Gosh. It was so amazing. I let the toasts melt on the butter then devoured it. It was the best french toast I've ever had. My boyfriend had the eggs benedict special. He claimed they were the best one he's ever had. All the ingredients were farm fresh. It also came with a side of potatoes that came prepared like I've never seen before. It was like a hash browns formed into a ball and held together by melted cheese. They even put fresh fruit combination of grapefruit, watermelon, and orange on the side of each plate. Service was very quick. The food came out 10 minutes after ordering it and she was on top of us filling coffee and getting our check as soon as we were done. The decor is old fashioned with roosters everywhere and nests of eggs painted on the seats of the hardwood chairs. Really cute stop for breakfast or lunch. Prices are reasonable between $6-$10 per plate.

My wife and I were on our way home from a great ski trip to Stratton Mountain and we were both looking forward to a great Vermont breakfast. We stopped in the Little Rooster Cafe 03/01/2012 @ 11:40 A.M. The place is small but a few tables were available. The waitress asked us if we would like to see a lunch menu and we said that we would like to see the breakfast menu instead. She wasn't very pleasant or accommodating and said they they finished serving breakfast at 11:30 A.M. As I looked around everyone was eating breakfast - on table had just been served! As I sat there I said to myself this women wasn't sympathetic at all. I said to my wife let's leave and we did. No sorry nothing. As we left I checked Yelp and discovered that other reviewers seemed to express the same experiences. I am glad that we left.

My husband and I spent a weekend in Vermont to celebrate our 1st anniversary. Since the continental breakfast at the inn we were staying at left something to be desired we decided to find a small place to grab a bite. We tried a place down the street that had a huge line and wouldn't tell people how long the wait was. We came upon the Little Rooster Café and there was only one couple in front of us, and we only had to wait about five minutes. The menu was great and the specials were even better! I ordered caramel apple French toast, which was a special that day. My husband ordered the eggs mornay off the menu. The food was fantastic. The café was small and the tables were full the whole time, but it didn't feel crowded. The waitresses were very friendly. I would definitely recommend it and will go back if we head up that way again!

Great breakfast place, and the most amazing waffles I have ever eatten. My wife and kids all loved the food, which was perfectly prepared, even the omlet (made as close to french syle as I've seen). Highly reocmmend for breakfast (other meals may be good too, but was only there for breakfast on 2 days).

My wife and I went into Manchester this past weekend to pickup some wine we ordered online, (Thanks George!!). It was raining and on the spur of the moment we decided to have a quick lunch here. It was a decent choice! I ordered a Roast Beef on Focaccia bread from their specials menu and she ordered a Black Rooster something or other (sorry I have forgotten the name for it) but it's their version of a Reuben using hot Pastrami. They were accompanied by two ice teas served with some celery root salad and beets on the side so we were all set. We both enjoyed the food, the service was good and the price was reasonable in this shopping outlet town; I think with tip the total was @25 dollars or so. Lunch here was a nice break from the rain and the traffic in town. We will have to come back and eat here again as we've heard this is an excellent place for breakfast!!

I love heading up to Stratton. And part of that love comes from knowing I'll get to chow down at Little Rooster Cafe at least once (and hopefully twice). It's nothing flash - but good wholesome food that's straight up delicious. The decor is cheery and comfortable. And how can you not love the nest-painted chairs? Makes you feel like a mother hen. As far as menu offerings go I've never been early enough for breakfast so I can't comment on the eggs and pancakes and what have you... but I'm sure everything is scrumptious. As for the lunch... well, its delicious! I LOVE The sirloin steak sandwich. Fresh baked bread, greens, caramelized onions, and (duh) perfectly cooked sirloin. Its my go to sammy... and the only thing that gets me through my 3 hour trip from New York (that and the promise of powder, of course). The rest of the lunch menu has a whole bunch of salads and sandwich classics: reubens, crab cakes, turkey, roast beef etc. The sandwiches are served with diced beets and slaw. A refreshing alternative to pickles & chips, no? There's a rotating list of blackboard specials, including soup of the day. And lots of fun brunch drinks like "The Flamingo," and a damn good Bloody Mary. Three words of advice: 1) LRC stops serving by 2:30. I almost cried once when I showed up around 3 after a late night out with friends, and they were closed. CLOSED! Never again. Even if I'm feeling a tad, er, under the weather, I will always rally the troops to get down the mountain by 2! 2) LRC does not accept credit cards, so come with cold hard cash (or personal checks) 3) If your heading up to the mountain for a weekend of skiing - LRC has great takeaway frozen lasagnas. Stuff is golden - and for $29 you can feed a small army! Definitely beats the sub-par dining once your up the mountain side!

The food at this little cafe is fresh, good, and often imaginatively prepared. Most folks rave about their breakfast fare, but I've enjoyed their burgers, salads, and sandwiches. Unfortunately, despite the great food and the country charm, a chilly attitude is pervasive. Service is efficient at best, but unaccommodating, and in some cases (I'm a people watcher---my dining neighbors fared worse than we did) downright rude. No credit cards.

My husband and i started our day in Vermont going to the Little Rooster Cafe, after reading about it in Rachael Ray's $40 a day cook book. Such a cute place and great menu. I had the homemade corned beef hash which was excellent and my husband had the smoked salmon with eggs which he was raving about. We will definitely return, the only thing i will give you a heads up now about is that they do not take credit cards. It is cash or check only, as well as other places in Manchester too.

The Husband and I had a very good breakfast here on a Saturday morning around 11:30 a.m. It's a small place, not many tables; at the time of our visit there were only a couple of other tables seated, so no wait. Our waitress was not excessively friendly, but reasonably so; she was perfectly polite and gave good, prompt service. I had a basic eggs/bacon/toast/potatoes breakfast which was very good (the potatoes were the cheesy hash brown ball that Julie R. described). The Husband had the Ultimate Corned Beef Hash, which was made with actual, recognizable corned *beef*, and which he said was very good. Other notes: - I didn't notice a street number on the building, but it's on 7a (Main Street) at the corner of Hillvale Dr (across the street is Mountainview Terrace). - Though as of this writing the Yelp listing says that they take credit cards, there was a sign on the door that clearly stated they do NOT. - When I used the restroom, I struggled to find the light switch -- and I noticed that a woman who went in after me did the same. It's just outside the door (on the right), but it's wallpapered to match the wall - the result being that it's camouflaged.

Great little place for breakfast. More than your typical diner with unique and tasty specials (lemon poppy waffles, blueberry bread french toast) as well as the standard favorites. The garden fritatta was great. Would definitely recommend!

My son & I had lunch at the Little Rooster last week, and were sorely disappointed, having read so many great reviews of this place. We had the French onion soup and a spinach salad first. They were both average, kinda difficult to screw either of them up. My son had a roasted lamb sandwich, I didn't try it (don't care for lamb) but he said it was very dry and not what he expected. I had a "thanksgiving feast" sandwich, which was not at all like it sounded, it was basically deli turkey on a roll with cranberry sauce and sage mayo. Whoop-tee-doo. Perhaps even more unforgivable was the service. Terrible doesn't even begin to explain it. We felt as if our waitress intentionally avoided eye contact with us so that she wouldn't have to deal with us. It took her nearly 15 minutes to deign to stop by and take our order. We both had glasses of iced tea that sat empty after the first glass. She dropped our food in front of us and didn't say a single word, just turned around and went back to the kitchen. And at the end, we had to stand up and go up to the register in order to pay after having waited a good 15 minutes for our tab. Not good. I would try this place one more time for breakfast, which I have heard it good, but if the service is the same, there won't be a 3rd visit. As an aside, we have since learned that the husband/wife team that owned the place sold it, and it is well-known locally that the quality has suffered. Perhaps this could explain our experience as compared with old reviews.

Had a nice breakfast here, as part of our annual trek to Manchester (I have to get my Northshire Bookstore fix). We've come to look forward to breakfast here after a good morning hike. M had "The Garden", an herbed scramble of eggs on an English muffin with their signature cheddar potatoes, and I has an "All American", eggs over, toast, and the best crispy bacon I've ever had. Service was good, timely and pleasant (they must have read the reviews). Food was tasty. My only complaint, I felt they had changed the menu to compete with the more "foody-friendly" Up for Breakfast . We love simple diner breakfast fare, done well. Don't always need fancy. Otherwise, a nice meal.

Hash or pancakes for breakfast for breakfast here you can't go wrong. Coffee is strong and has always been good. Hash is a nice chop, fresh onion, peppers And potato and corned beef with poached eggs on top. Crispy hand cut toast. One of my favorite traditional breakfast meals. Could eat it anytime. Pancakes here are a big conversation thread amongst locals here. Never had anything but these two items. Yah, they are that good!

Was recommended this place for a quick bite to eat. They were writing their specials of the day on the chalkboard as we walked in. Good stuff on the menu, I decided to go with the veggie chili and a house salad. Both were very good and the chili was a bowl the size of my head. It was pretty hearty and had good flavor and I was trying to figure out how they made it taste like it had meat in it. Probably better not to know. The place was quaint, like you were eating at your friend's mom's house or something. We were the first ones in there and by the time we left, they were almost full. They had espresso there, always good if you need a little wake-up call. And it was reasonably priced. My friend had the portabello mushroom sandwich, which wasn't to her fancy. The chili was definitely a winner though. Cute decor too, if you're really into roosters. They were fast, the server was polite, and food was good (at least for me).

GRRRRREAT breakfast!! Delicious, fresh ingredients -- our daughter had pancakes, I had a garden veggie frittata, and my husband had the granola, all enjoyed greatly. The service was speedy but friendly (after zipping us to our table, our waitress buzzed by with an Eric Carle book for our daughter to read). And the bottomless coffee was really good, not your average burned and watery tasting cuppa. Plus it's a darling little space, with some worthy artistic nests on the chair seats. Big FYI: cash or check only.

We wanted to like the Little Rooster, we really did. Locals told us it's wonderful, but sadly our experience was something less. Mostly it was a matter of the quality of the food and disinterested service. The restaurant is a cute little house by the side of the road that draws big crowds especially for breakfasts, apparently. We arrived for lunch, ordered some sandwiches from an older server who never cracked a smile, much less ask us how things might be going. OK, we don't need to be friends, but friendly service would be a good idea. The meal? The Thai chicken soup was chicken soup with veggies but only Thai in the vaguest of ways. A disappointment. The roast beef dip featured rather tasteless dip and some bland beef slices. The Reuben sandwich was the best of our dishes, nicely balanced with sauerkraut and dressing. Overall, not an awful experience but not one that encouraged a return visit. We'll probably try it again, hoping for better.

Excellent food and friendly service! I had a special Angie s Benny. Spinach and artichokes with roasted red pepper sauce! It looked so beautiful I should've taken a pic but I couldn't wait to dive in . Great coffee and amazing jelly. They have a shredded potato with cheddar side dish too!

Really enjoyed lunch at this cute little cafe. My mom was so happy and was non stop raving about her food. We all ordered from the specials menu written on the blackboard. My sis and I ordered the lobster roll which was so good. It was only $13 and the roll was toasty and buttery. My mom ordered the cod special and the fish was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It tasted fresh. Her bread bun was so crusty and yummy. My mom asked to come back again the next day. We thought the service was good. We got our food quickly and the waitress was friendly. It's cash only.

Had a large crowd to feed and called ahead for two frozen lasagnas. They were huge and delicious and easy to bake. I would recommend, if you will be in the area for skiing, to stop by and pick one up. They make life easy after and day on the slopes.

The food was really great and well priced. Very good prices. I got a salmon sandwich and my guest got a portabella sandwich. Just like all the other reviews, service was fair. Our server was a bit abrupt and stand offish but helpful in her suggestions on the menu. The food outweighs the mediocre service. Would have rated higher if service was better. It wasn't even busy so there's no good excuse for it. I doubt the type of people that work here have any idea what Yelp is so have no idea what people are saying here. ALSO, FYI, cash only. Not cards accepted
